I am choosing Ben Franklin’s number one virtue which is temperance. Ben said that you are not to eat out of boredom and do not drink just to get drunk. The reason I picked this one is not because I drink but because it seems like when I am bored I do eat a lot. Eating a lot is bad for us and it does not help that there is a very high obesity rate in America. When you eat and you are bored it just all goes to fat because your body does not want it and also you are not usually not doing much if your bored so therefore your body does not use what you put into it and it just turns to fat.
There is two steps I am going to take to try to perfect this virtue. One is try to remain active after I get home from track practice just by like going out to shoot basketball or hang out with friends. The second step I am going to take is just keep my mind off food but this one will be hard because food is advertised everywhere. There is also one more thing I might try and that is eat until I am full at diner that way I am not as hungry two hours later when I am bored.
Update #1
Perfecting my virtue is going rather well. I find parts of it very easy like just keeping myself entertained for a couple of hours so I don’t have time to think about food. There are a few challenges that come with this also. The most recent thing I could think of is last night everyone in my house was snacking on something except for me. It was so hard to not just go to the kitchen and get something to eat, but I held out and in the end it will hopefully pay off.
Update #2
Once again it seems that this virtue is going very well. I am still staying very active not just letting myself sit around and be bored. I go out and play at night now that it has gotten nice. Many times when I come inside to get cleaned up it has started to get dark where we can not see to play anymore. That was the upside to being able to perfect this virtue but the challenges still have not changed. Many times when my parents and brother are eating it makes me very hungry but I fight off the temptation to eat. In the end I hope it pays off but either way I am still going to work very hard at it.
Update #3
As the week progresses my goal to perfect temperance has gotten so much easier. For example tonight I went to the gym then to a friends house and then to mow a friends yard. Thus having no time to really get bored and think about food. This challenge has turned out to be a lot easier than it seems and also it is helping me to drop a few extra pounds I am carrying around. The challenge part of this whole process has kind have just fizzled itself out as in when ever I see food it does not bother me any more.
Update #4
I have come a long way with perfecting my virtue of temperance. This project has helped me in many ways. Something I can think of right off the top of my head is keeping myself busy for many hours and not get bored and have time to think about food. The challenge of wanting to eat because somebody else is has just kind of seen itself out the door where as to I do not think about hardly anymore. I remain very active so much sometimes I don’t have time to turn on the TV because I am so busy. I wish I would have started this virtue earlier because it has also helped me with losing wait. I hope I can just keep it up after the project is over.
